Quilty pleasures
All of our cosiest styles, explained
The nights are drawing in and the mercury is dropping, which can mean only one thing here at Roake Studio: it’s quilt season.
Our responsibly sourced organic quilt fabric has always been a favourite – both of ours and of our customers – since we introduced our iconic Nicole Jacket six years ago (where does the time go?!). Rosie modelled this design on a favourite vintage jacket that her grandma made, and it’s become one of our all-time best-sellers.
We’ve since introduced a whole host of quilted styles – there are now five to choose from – so we thought it would be good to talk you through each one’s features and benefits, as well as the luxurious quilted fabrics that we have on offer this autumn.
The Nicole Jacket
When Rosie’s beloved jacket that was passed down to her by her grandma finally fell apart, she set out to make something that would take its place. Nicole is something you can wear year-round, perfect for everything from post-swim beach days to chilly autumn walks. With an easy fit and loose sleeves, it’s brilliant for layering; we especially like it over a waistcoat or a slimline denim jacket, and it obviously looks great with stripes and a natty neckerchief.
Nicole is made-to-order (like all of our garments!), which means we can make adjustments to the sleeve length if you leave us a note when you order. It’s currently available in Marine Blue, Sage Grey, Lichen and Blackberry. Please note that Lichen and Blackberry are currently available on pre-order, and we’ll be able to dispatch them in November.
The Elsie Jumper
Elsie came about when Rosie wanted the ease of a sweatshirt (we all love a sweatshirt, right?) but with more of an elevated look. Our quilted fabrics automatically make it more polished than your average jumper, but Elsie also features a cool dropped shoulder, boxy shape and elegant pleated sleeves.
This jumper is a favourite with all of the girls in the studio – in fact, Amy had worn and washed her black one so much it had started to fade a bit, so she dyed it very successfully with some Dylon (you can see the results here). We’re really thrilled with how our new Witchhazel and Floral quilts take Elsie to another level.
The Patsy Jacket
Patsy is the latest addition to our quilt family. This lovely collarless, tie-front design is the ideal throw-on-and-go addition to your wardrobe. With a boxy shape and handy patch pockets at the front, we can also add or remove length on the hem to suit you (the joy of made-to-order!).
We just LOVE Patsy. Another one that works super well with layering, we think she’d suit a roll neck underneath when it gets a bit colder, but is also that transformative piece that you can just throw on with jeans and a plain tee and feel really well put together. Rosie is wearing our new Witchhazel Quilt here, which is dual-sided, so you’ll need to let us know what you want on the outside, and as your contrasting inside, when you order.
The Nicole Waistcoat
We’re big fans of our Nicole Waistcoat! It’s such an easy piece to give you that little extra layer of warmth now that it’s getting chilly. And you get options with this little number, too – as well as choosing your own fabric (there are six to choose from at the moment), you get to choose the colour of the binding, which is the fabric that trims the outside of the waistcoat and forms the ties at the front. Here, Rosie is wearing Marine Blue with Black Binding.
Choose one of our fancier quilts - Witchhazel or Floral - and you’ve got yourself an easy evening look that will make a plain shirt and trousers, or a dress, feel just that bit more special. That said, we love how these fabrics look against your favourite denim jeans, too.
The Elsie Cardigan
The cardigan version of our Elsie Jumper, this handy throw-on features the same boxy shape and pleated sleeves – we do recommend sizing down if you’d prefer a more fitted shape. As with the Nicole Waistcoat, you can choose the colour of your ties, meaning you could end up with a completely unique item of clothing.
Here, Hannah is wearing the beige side of our Witchhazel Quilt, which means the inside of this cardi is the blue side. We love this option of having a surprise different colour when you untie your cardigan. Also available in our plain quilted cottons.
