Sustainability means the world to us.

From certifications to circular design, you can find out more about our policy below:

Made-to-order:

In January 2020, we decided to scale back styles, and introduced made-to-order on certain areas of the collection. We produce in small batches to reduce our waste (even more) and in turn we’re able to give you a better chance to make informed choices and provide consistent work for our makers. You can find out more about our made-to-order move here.

Circular design: You’ve probably heard this term mentioned every now and then, or maybe you’ve read it when researching sustainable and ethical fashion.

It essentially refers to the design of something that doesn’t have a beginning, middle and end to its life cycle but is instead... You guessed it, circular. This means that when a product comes to the end of its use, it simply begins another stage of its life rather than becoming waste.

At Roake, the lifetime of our designs is one of the most important parts of the design process. We want our products to be cherished over time. From each fabric we choose, each silhouette we develop when drafting patterns - we’re concerned with the longevity of all that we make. This is an important aspect of circular design - considering the way a product will respond to your changing needs over time, such as being multi-functional, layer-able and adjustable.

Our jewellery pieces are circular in design. We used brass as a base material as it can be recycled infinitely. See our jewellery collection here.

Reduced wastage:

We utilise fabric offcuts creatively, by producing one-off items and small accessories in batches. Any offcuts that we cannot use are available to crafters to order from us, or donated to local community interest companies who provide creative workshops and low-cost craft materials to the community.

We sort our everyday studio waste appropriately, to allow for recycling and biodegrading.

Biodegradable packaging:

We use recyclable and biodegradable packaging for your orders, with sustainably paper stock, and recycled paper stock on printed materials.

Reduced shipping days:

We reduced our shipping days to twice weekly, to reduce our carbon emissions.

Renewable energy powered studio:

We use a renewable energy source to power our studio.

Studio life:

We encourage and support staff members to travel to work using green transport and we do not accept the use of single-use plastics in the studio.

Fabrics:

We’ve been working with recycled and deadstock fabrics for specific collections. These are fabrics that have been saved from landfill.

When sourcing new, we use sustainable fabrics and organic producers where possible.

We make sustainable choices at each decision point and review our practices regularly. If you have a question about any of our processes, please get in touch.
