Sunshine on a Shoe String

Fancy a break but tight on cash? Looking for somewhere new to explore? Have you considered Croatia? I certainly hadn’t, until two of my oldest friends suggested a sporadic summer holiday.

You know how it is. The Whatsapp group is all ‘OMG we should go on hols’, but no one ever arranges it. We’re all busy people. Life gets in the way… But not this year. One of my childhood pals was determined that this summer would be the one for the reunion hols we’ve been raving on about for years, and by jove am I glad she got our arses in gear.

None of us can remember why we chose Croatia, but I have to say it is a truly beautiful and unspoilt part of the world. We flew in to Split, and stayed at a contemporary apartment that we found on Airbnb.

The apartment by the beach was perfect, about 5-10 minutes on the bus from the city centre, but felt like a world away. Our host, Lujana, was amazing. She gave us all the info we needed for an amazing break. Tips on good restaurants, nice beaches, places to visit and even which bus to get into town.

We spent the days lazing in the sunshine on the platoon, diving into the sea, and snacking on fresh fish goujons. The late afternoon/early evening was my favourite time. The sun had cooled and the beaches started to thin out a little, sipping cocktails and snoozing on the sunbed before popping back to the apartment to get ready for the evening.

The evenings were filled with strolls around the beautiful old town, and dinner in the walls of the palace. My favourite restaurant was called Corto maltese and was located on the cusp of the old town. The food was exquisite and the service amazing! They really made us feel welcome.

Sightseeing was casual for us. In the intense midday heat (around 40 degrees most days!) it was difficult to do anything but swim. Nonetheless, we decided to take a trip to Krka on the last day of our trip. The waterfalls in the beautiful Croatian National Park were incredible. Arriving by boat, we swam in the clear water and explored the lush greenery of the surrounding woodland. We saw snakes, swam with fish and clambered across rocks to reach the falls.

Croatia was great value, easy to navigate and unspoilt by tourism. I’d recommend visiting in late spring if sightseeing is your thing, and check out Airbnb! There is some great value accommodation available, especially for groups!
